Movie about Bill Cunningham will extend thru April 7th

A few weeks ago I wrote about a upcoming movie about Bill Cunningham, legendary photographer for the New York Times. I had the pleasure of seeing it myself. This movie is a delightful documentary about his incredible career. You really see his humanity throughout the film. People were clapping after the movie, I can’t say  I have ever seen that when the filmmakers weren’t in the theatre!

Bill Cunningham, writes for 2 columns in the New York Times. One column, ” On the Street” captures the pulse of New York fashion. The movie shows how he watches people on the street for hours and how he looks for people who stand out and create their own unique look.

When I work with organizing clients and getting their closets in order. I always ask my clients what has worked for them. Fashion is a personal way to express yourself and believe it or not, so is organizing.

So you still have time to see, “Bill Cunningham New York”. It  will give you a small glimpse on how he views life, ethics and passion.

P.S. One aspect of Bill Cunningham is that he is very organized about his work, he has dozens of file cabinets that contains all of his  photos in chronological order – what a dream!

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire -100th Anniversary

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire- 100th Anniversary

Today is the 100th Anniversary of The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire here in New York City. This horrific event took 146 victims, mostly young women and changed history on fire safety and the creation and strength of organizing unions.

As a professional organizer, although I am not a labour organizer, I am always amazed how people can be so much powerful once they take control of their lives. I am glad that these victims are being honored today and that we can never forget how they have impacted our lives, 100 years later.

To find out more details of this tragic event please check out this link: http://learning.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/25/100-years-later-examining-the-impact-of-the-triangle-shirtwaist-factory-fire/

The Uniform Project – Organized Commitment

When I read an article about The Uniform Project,  in the summer of ’09 I reached out  to the creative team  Sheena Matheiken and Eliza Starbuck. Sheena came up with the concept and Eliza designed the dress. The simple idea of wearing 1 dress + 1 year + 1 cause was compelling to say, the least.

I approached them to help spread awareness and raise money. They asked me to help Sheena get her closet organized so it was easy to get dressed. I was thrilled to help out. Here are a few pics of before/ after to help getting up and out the door in the winter time. Having a simplified, sustainable dress was a way to be creative without wasting time or energy. Compact style to go!

Here are a few pictures of the before closet and drawers. The things that we got rid of was donated to a recycling organization called Wearable Collections. We used eco friendly drawer organizers. storage. Here are some before/ after pics of her closet. Now Sheena was invited this year to speak about her project at the Ted Conference. Check it out
